PROJECT "SOCIAL SERVICES - IN SUPPORT OF ROMA WOMEN AND CHILDREN FOR A LIFE FREE OF VIOLENCE "
FUNDED BY THE DAPHNE PROGRAMME OF THE EUROPEAN UNION /JUST/2013/DAP/AG/5661
The project is implemented during the period January 2015 until December 2016 within the three member states of the EU. Leading organization is "Association NAIA" Bulgaria with partners SURT Foundation, Spain and the Women's Center of Karditsa, Greece.
The main objective of the Project is improving the support for victims of domestic violence from Roma origin in the EU by raising awareness about the existing specialized social services in three Member States; increasing the capacity of the organizations’ teams which provide support to that group and also encouraging the sharing of best practices and experience while working with them throughout the Union.
Target groups are the teams of NGOs, public organizations, religious communities, trade unions, etc., which are providing social services for Roma women and children and work in Roma communities.
While developing the project idea we identified that the problem with violence against women and children in Roma communities is particularly relevant and affects a growing part of the EU countries. We identified the difficult access of this group of victims of domestic violence to the support services due to lack of information about them or not quite adequate services offered to them, without taking into account the cultural diversity of this community and its specific needs. We have noticed the need of assessment of the existing services; analyze their deficiencies and guidelines for their better work. There was a need for increasing the knowledge of the professionals about the specifics of the Roma community and the skills to work with this target group. We recognized the need for sharing best practices of support that offer individual approach to Roma women and children victims of domestic violence within the EU.
Through the Project was conducted a survey on total of 174 forms of support for Roma women and children victims of domestic violence in the three participating countries through an online survey and interviews on place, with nearly 200 managers, professionals and Roma women, received help and support. We collected a lot of interesting and useful information that was analyzed. Currently, a Manual is prepared in 4 languages, which summarizes the existing social services and presents individual specific practices. In this Manual, methodologies and expertise will be shared in support of victims of domestic violence from Roma origin, the experience and best practices.
In Bulgaria, Spain and Greece were trained about 200 professionals from 60 specialized support services for victims of domestic violence from Roma origin and organizations working in Roma communities for introducing with the specifics of the Roma community, the cases of domestic violence in it and how to intervene effectively.
